I would like to spend my holiday vacations wwoofing and learning more about regenerative agriculture and sustainable productions, as I aspire to have my own production in the future. The past holidays I joined wwoofing and worked as a volunteer in a blueberry production Portugal with two friends. I really enjoyed the different activites and I am interested in learning more about this lifestyle and how to manage a food production.

I have met a few people who have joined the WWOOF program and I have only heard good things. It just seems right up my ally and what a better way to see the world and meet new people. Working outdoors is where I am at my best. So working whilst traveling is the best of both worlds for me.

We would like to gain experience in farming, looking after animals, and the maintenance of a working farm. We seek to develop our knowledge, get hands-on experience, and implement it on our farm in the future. We are very open-minded and enjoy meeting new and intriguing people.

We are so fortunate to live in paradise, high rainfall green pastures, nestled under magnificent mount Barrow. Usually once or twice a winter we’re treated to snow, adding a whole new element to our beautiful property. We proudly sit at our dining table and enjoy meals of all our own produce, from multiple vegetables to mouth watering beef. We have a closed in blueberry and raspberry enclosure ensuring our freezer is full and our cupboards stocked with preserves. We breed pedigree golden retrievers, black Angus cows, Birman cats, and light Sussex chooks go without saying, perfect entertainment for any animal lover. We have a permanent running creek, home for mountain trout and spectacular platypus who pop their delightful heads up every evening. Our house is quite large as our free range children have all left the nest. Leaving us with large empty bedrooms. Our wwoof guests are welcomed and treated as part of our family.

Skills I Want to Learn:
Before we start our trip around Australia, my partner will go skiing in Thredbo. Because I obtained a bad knee injury last year while skiing, I won't be joining him. Simply because I have no confidence anymore. My knee has completely healed and I'm very mobile and back to my previous fitness level. That brings me to why I'm joining WWOOF. I want to use this free time to socialise with like-minded people and learn new skills while helping them out. I'd love to, one day, be self-sufficient on my own block of land and grow my own veggies and have some farm animals roaming around. WWOOFING is the perfect opportunity to get a taste of this life and also meet new people. I have done a similar thing through the website Helpx.

I want to travel in Tasmania and I think the woofing is a good way to explore and meet people who share the kind of life I tend to reach, that's a way to share stories and it's inspiring to see different ways to do and experiences of life. I'd love to do my 88 days for the visa extension, if that can happen through woofing that's the best !

“Millpost” is a 2700 acre wool growing property 30km east of Canberra. We have been implementing aspects of permaculture design since 1979. We mostly run merino sheep but also some poultry, house cows, sheep dogs, and cats. We grow much of our vegetables and have a nursery of trees for planting on the farm. Millpost is a beautiful part of the Southern Tablelands, with rolling hills, Box woodlands, native grasslands and some great creeks and dams to swim in. We sit next to Kowen Forest, a popular destination for it’s mountain bike trails, river, history and Molonglo Gorge. Other attractions include our old lime kiln and aboriginal axe quarry. WWOOFers are included in all work on the farm and could be gardening, planting, working with sheep, fencing, building, whatever we are doing at the time.

Skills I Want to Learn: Animal Care
I joined WWOOF because I want to experience real farm life in Australia and connect with local people and culture. I especially hope to learn more about animal care and sustainable lifestyles. It’s also very important for me to improve my English, and I think WWOOF is a great way to learn naturally through daily life and work. I’d love to spend time helping, learning, and living simply close to nature.

I thought it was amazing that I could learn about organic farming and be so close to people's lives. I'm hoping to build up a lot of relationships in Australia, as I have a bright and positive personality, so I'm looking forward to talking to them and getting to know them.

Our property includes a farm, temple, and guesthouse, rural property surrounded by scenic rainforest. The farm includes a variety of crops, such as fruits, vegetables, and herbs, as well as livestock such as geese, and chickens. The farming practices are spray-free and sustainable, using methods that are in harmony with nature. We are located in Nimbin, a small town located in New South Wales, Australia, known for its alternative way of being and rich spiritual community. Our temple is a non-denominational spiritual gathering place that welcomes elements from all spiritual traditions. The temple is used for prayer, meditation, yoga, and other spiritual practices, as well as for larger community gatherings and celebrations including regular dances and other fun things. The overall focus of the property is on spirituality, mindfulness, and connection with nature. I and the other residents of the property share a commitment to living a conscious, intentional lifestyle that prioritizes spiritual growth and environmental sustainability.

I've come to this quite late in life (57), but feel very comfortable to be joining now. This winter and spring (2025), I intend driving north from Tasmania (possibly beyond Cairns) and engaging in the sharing and acquisition of new knowledge and skills, and hopefully some memorable experiences of new friendships.

My block is on a wild river, only 20km from Gordonvale on a sealed road, and 40km south of Cairns. On the other side of the river is Wooroonooran National Park, a World Heritage Rainforest, about the same area as the Daintree Rainforest. Being centrally located, the block is almost equidistant from Cairns/Babinda and the Tablelands. Life is subject to the elements, the mood of the river, sun and rainfall patterns. Wildlife abounds, and includes a large variety of bird and aquatic life, moths and butterflies (I breed Cairns Birdwings), insects, reptiles, several species of marsupials, and brumbies (wild horses). I do not have pets, as nature provides endless companionship and entertainment, for which I'm very grateful. UPDATE #3: Due to Tropical Cyclone Jasper on 13th December 2023, the bridge between our area and the nearest town was swept away - this was planned for repair in the dry season which didn't start until June 2024. We were traveling via boat/kayak across the river until February 10th 2024, when a footbridge was installed. The temporary road bridge was installed in late July 2024, and preparation for a more permanent bridge is well underway. These events illustrate the occasional difficulties experienced in the Cyclone season (November to May each year).   While half of my life was spent living and working in the Pacific, and the other half working in Renewable Energy in Australia, I love this connection to nature, and its wildlife. I also have adopted some of the extended family/community aspects of island cultures, which some people from western cultures find hard to adopt and understand. I have lived here for over 20 years, and grow a range of tropical fruit and vegetables for my own and friends consumption. Many years ago I planted a number of rainforest trees such as lemon myrtle (which makes a great tea), davidsons plum, lemon aspin, and evodia (which attracts the Ulysses butterfly). There is also a well established vine which hosts the caterpillar which becomes Australia's largest butterfly, the Cairns Birdwing. The house is entirely off-grid and is solar powered (I'm an electrical engineer who started in renewable energy in 1974), and I deal with my own water supply and waste treatment. Where possible I've reduced my usage of fossil fuels, so have no backup generator, and run an electric mower, electric sports motorcycle and occasionally, an electric chainsaw. My sports are almost all human or natural energy systems powered, and have been through my life. Two self contained, open plan, single bedroom houses are joined by a solar walkway. Both have verandah's with a view of the river. I sleep in the newer house, but use the kitchen/lounge in the older house, which has accomodation for WWOOFers in an adjoining bedroom. The older house also has the shared bathroom/ laundry attached to it, and has access to the original outside toilet. There is limited internet access via satellite, for email only, for an hour each evening, by prior negotiation with the host. Mobile reception is OK for SMS out on the road, but is patchy for voice. A landline is available for local calls, also by prior negotiation. Compared to an outer island in the Pacific, communication is very good - compared to a big city in most parts of the world, it is slower.

As I mentioned earlier, I’ve fallen in love with Australia so much, so I decided to extend my Working Holiday visa. I wanted to find a way to contribute something meaningful to this country as part of the extension process. While many people choose to work on farms or in factories in the primary industry to meet the visa requirements—which I understand can be meaningful in its own way—I was hoping to do something even more rewarding and memorable, something that would feel meaningful both for myself and for Australia. The idea of living with a local host family also felt really special to me. I became particularly interested in WWOOF after a Japanese friend, who is currently doing WWOOFing, highly recommended it and shared how much she enjoys the experience.

WWOOF Australia acknowledges the Traditional owners of the land on which we work. We honour the ongoing cultural & spiritual connections, heritage, customs & beliefs of Aboriginal people & pay respect to Elders past, present and emerging.
